While hybrid learning was previously scheduled to resume Thursday, Nov. 19, the delay was announced in anticipation of the region’s move to high risk (orange) status on Friday, Superintendent Gregory A. Troxwell said in a Nov. 17 letter to parents.

“Clearly, the second wave is here,” Troxwell said. “The closure is a proactive step intended to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within Phillipsburg and our surrounding communities during this time period.”

A total of 44 positive cases comprising 31 students and 13 staff members was reported earlier in the week, leading to the quarantine of 144 students and 43 staff members, Troxwell said.

“I am making this tough decision for the protection of all our schools’ populations as the health and safety of our students and staff remains paramount,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s 114th Annual Thanksgiving Day Game against the Easton School District has been canceled, along with the Phillipsburg vs. Easton field hockey and girls’ soccer games that had been scheduled for Thursday.

“We have gotten this far together, and together we can get through this difficult period in our recovery,” Troxwell said. “Let’s make safe practices a habit to position ourselves for a safe return on Jan. 11.”
